Stage 11 took Dakar rally competitors through the heart of the empty quarter, with massive sand dunes littered along the route.
“Yeah that was a long, long day. Started with a 50km liaison first thing this morning, then 379km of special, then another 320km liaison to finish. 13 hours on the bike in total. The special itself was tough, especially up until the refuel at 229km. We started off in the big dunes for about 110km, then onto an old oil field access road with sand dunes all over it. It seemed to take forever to get to the refuel, but from there to the finish was fast and flowing.”
“The 320km liaison to finish was brutal, I was falling asleep the whole time. There was a prize for me at the end though, my dad and my girlfriend were at the bivouac waiting for me. It was so good to see them after being away for 3 weeks. They’ll be around for the final day tomorrow too, which will make it extra special. 1 stage to go, then a month of sleep I reckon..”
