Stage Report - Day 10 - 15th January 2020
Start location: Haradh
Finish location: Shubaytah
Stage Length: 534km SS (timed), 74km liaison, 608km total
Stage finish position: 88th
General Classification position: N/A
Today’s stage took competitors from Haradh to Shubaytah, in the desolate ‘empty quarter’ of Saudi Arabia.
“That was a fun stage, it was great to get back on the bike again after the engine troubles I had. It was pretty dangerous at first, especially for the fast guys, there were a lot of dunes with sharp drops that were difficult to see, I think 5 people ended up being airlifted out. The medical crew were put under such a strain that they couldn’t run the second section of the stage as there weren’t enough helicopters available to ensure us competitors were safe.”
“Today was also the first half of the marathon stage, so we’re camped out at some airfield in the empty quarter tonight. About 120 riders and all their smelly kit in a makeshift marquee, it’s quite the sight.. even the factory riders are in here with us amateurs. Second leg of the stage tomorrow, with more dunes promised.”
